Through the conceptualization of this study, I have been informed by the work done by TIIE, which is my assistantship. I have chosen to work in the same domain for reasons of interest, convenience of sampling, and the possibility of furthering my with with TIIE through my coursework. I was unsure if my class study would be something which I try and present, publish, or in some other way add to the body of knowledge generated by TIIE. Upon reflection and discussion I have decided to follow a more independent and cautious route.
This study will be developed within the realm of the classroom, and, in order to be able to fit within the timeline of the course, will not be considered as a TIIE project. I will, however, still use the convenience sampling that I can access through TIIE. Also, upon completion, I will take the study and my findings to the larger TIIE group, and discuss whether or not it is of interest for further research. Ifso, I will treat the classroom study as a pilot study, disregard the data, file an addendum to TIIE's IRB paperwork, and be able to conduct the study in a larger way. If the larger group does not find that it has value within the realm of TIIE, I will either independently pursue further research in this vein (if I determine that it would be a possible area for comps work) or acknowledge that it exists as a method of learning, and set it down.
The immediate practical implications for this are two-fold. One, I can be satisfied with a lit review that is as outlined in the class - smaller, less comprehensive. Second, my IRB paperwork need not align with TIIE, and I can fill it out independently.
