Is middle school unique in than there is often looping and multiple age groups? Do the teachers get acclimated to innovation because they are more likely to be looking at a 2 year commitment to students instead of a "one and done" model? is this really more about the grade level than technology? is technology gel
technology helps to facilitate the need for constant innovation that is present in the middle school atmosphere.
technology answers the call for larger amount of innovation
Planning for the teacher's performance in a lesson is very much like planning an improv skit. You know that you have a set amount of time. You know that there's going to be a basic structure. You know what things you need to incorporate - improv teams always take suggestions, teachers have their curriculum.
The students are other actors, who you can choose to make aware of the plan, and they'll react based on who they are - their goals may not be the same as your goals. When we're talking about engagement, we're talking about them acting as well in the scene.
There's a culture of "yes, and" with the technology piece - using the tools that the students provide.
